they have some other votes and maybe even a vote on hurricane sandy assistance coming up as well. when the house came in originally today at noon, a lot of the members went down to the floor to give what they call 1- minute court short speeches about any topic they want. the fiscal cliff obviously was the main topic. here are some of those speeches from noon today. >> the people that do all the complaining about spending, the record clearly shows -- to wars that took a trillion dollars out of the american economy. unfunded tax cuts created the worst economy in 60 years as a prescription program that costs $730 billion over the next 10 years. raising the debt ceiling authorizes you to pay back the money you have already spent. republicans in this house voted for and have a moral obligation to repay that money. mr. speaker, the american economy needs to grow much more than the projected 2% for 2013. 2% growth is not enough to sustain the current level of employment. the american economy needs robust growth of 3%-4%. we need to do nation-building, not in afghanistan or iraq, but at h

it would unconscienable without voting on sandy. and the strong bipartisan support -- we got 12 votes from the republicans. the fact that three democrats that couldn't be here were here. we could have had 64 votes. we still got more than 60 even with those three absences shows how important this bill was, the strong waurn vote gives an impetus to the bill and says to speaker boehner, this bill has bipartisan support not only in the senate but we know in the house. please move it. do not ignore the needs of new yorkers, new jerseyites and others who have suffered. we have a desperate situation still in new york. we have billions and billions of dollars in damage. we have homeowners waiting, watching to see if this bill would pass so that they could begin to think of getting help to rebuild their homes. we have small business owners, watching, waiting to see if this bill will pass, to see if they can get help to get their businesses going. we have governments both large and small, the state of new york city dwovet -- government and so

if the hurricane sandy ban comes they would have to pass that. that is the signal they don't think they can bring their members back to town. if the house does amend it there is going to be a lot of pressure on the senate that throws the hot potato back into their laps. they might scramble to see if they can get folks back or they will have to reject that and we're less than 48 hours away from the end of this congress, not to mention we're over the edge of the cliff. host: when do you expect the house to come back into session? guest: they did not give a specific time. they just said they will do more conversations throughout the afternoon. they are going to go back into -- the house republican are going to go back into a conference first then we'll so floor action. before we see a bill on the floor we're going to go through the rules committee they will have to report a rule out on the sandy spending bill and on the fiscal cliff deal. so there is a lot of stuff that has to happen before we get these billses of the floor should the republicans de

the senate tomorrow will consider the sandy supplemental legislation. hopefully they will pass that tomorrow or by saturday. certainly, the house of representatives needs to address that supplemental to give relief to those that were savaged by sandy in the worst storm that has hit the northeast perhaps in history. the violence against women act passed senate overwhelmingly, something that we could work on today. the farm bill expires on december 31. milk prices will spike substantially if that bill is left to expire. mr. cantor indicated that would be addressed before we left here at the end of the 112th congress. that is some six days a week off for days until december 31, obviously. foreign intelligence surveillance act, to make this country -- to continue making this country safe and secure and and power our people to protect us for those who would harm us, that bill is being considered on the senate today come on the floor. the senate is here, working. the house is not. we had a pro forma session. a session without substance or solutions. postal or
